Netflix's Bird Box Reaches 45 Million Views in First Week

Netflix's Bird Box Reaches 45 Million Views in First Week

The dystopian sci-fi movie, directed by Susanne Bier, has reportedly been viewed by more than 45 million Netflix subscriber accounts since it became available for streaming on December 21, the company announced.

"Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box - best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!".

Personally I'm not one of those people-or perhaps I should say, "accounts".

To counteract this absurdity, the rest of us started sharing our favorite Sandra Bullock movies.

The numbers that Netflix cites poses a ton of industry questions. For close watchers of TV's shift to streaming, it was a watershed moment.

As Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment apparently put it: "independently verified by. uh, Netflix".

It would be hard, for example, to say what the activity of 45 million accounts equates to in traditional box office terms. "There was not the scorched-earth publicity campaign employed by movie studios to make you aware of a film you most likely do not want to see". Netflix refused to tell The Verge how many Bird Box streamers were based in the U.S. (Cordcutting.com has reached out to Netflix for comment, too, and we'll update this piece if Netflix shares any new information with us).

On the few other occasions that the streaming giant has revealed numbers, it announced that over 80 million subscribers watched at least one original romantic comedy earlier this summer, led by the breakout hit To All the Boys I've Loved Before.

While Nielsen has endeavored to try and track Netflix ratings, Netflix has never released anything more than the vaguest of data - 45 million was a specific, precise number.

As Business Insider pointed out, it doesn't necessarily mean all those accounts wound up finishing Bird Box.

In "Bird Box", Bullock plays a mother of two children desperately trying to survive in a world overrun with monsters who can kill you just by being seen.
