Sailor from Fort Meade among those killed in Syria bombing, Navy announces

Three of the four Americans who were killed in a suicide blast near a us -led coalition patrol in Syria were identified Friday.

Kent was among the 16 people killed when an attacker outfitted with explosives targeted troops conducting a routine patrol in the town of Manbij on Wednesday. Since then, national security adviser John Bolton has said the pullout will be based on conditions that protect Kurdish fighters, who've been part of the US -led coalition but are considered terrorists by Turkey.

The Navy only said Kent was from "upstate NY", but Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro confirmed Kent is from Dutchess County.

"We are very proud of her service", she said. "We're supporting her family 100 percent at this time of sorrow".

A fourth person, a Defense Department contractor, was also killed in the ISIS attack on a restaurant.

Kent enlisted in the Navy 2003 and graduated from boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in 2004.

She was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Activity 66, based out of Fort Meade, Maryland.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and teammates of Chief Petty Officer Kent during this extremely hard time". Kent reported to CWA 66 after the command was established on August 10, 2018.

Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver, who knew Kent as a teenager, said her death is a tragedy.

"May her light shine on through her friends and loved ones", Molinaro said in a statement, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. "Dutchess County will long remember Shannon's service to our nation and her ultimate sacrifice".

Military awards and decorations include the SEAL Insignia, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon and Pistol Expert Medal.

Shannon Kent, 35, of NY, was a Navy chief cryptologic technician. "Although she has left us way too soon, she will not be forgotten, and her legacy will live on with us", said CWA 66 Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collections) Denise Vola. said in a statement.

Governor Cuomo said flags will be flown at half-staff from now through interment.

The bombing, for which the Islamic State claimed responsibility, came less than a month after President Donald Trump declared the militants defeated and ordered 2,000 USA troops in the country be withdrawn.

The surprise announcement sent shockwaves through the war-torn country and rattled some of the President's top aides - including Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who resigned over the move.

Last month, Mr Trump announced that the U.S. would begin pulling out all its 2,000 troops from Syria because IS had been "defeated".

Vice President Mike Pence told the Global Chiefs of Mission conference at the State Department Wednesday, the same day as the bombing, that "the caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated".
