Teen arrested over Scientology stabbing in Sydney

A teenager has been arrested after a man was stabbed to death at the headquarters of the Church of Scientology in Sydney, Australia.

The teenager, whose name has not been released, was being escorted from the church in Chatswood on Thursday afternoon when he pulled out a "very sharp kitchen knife" in the driveway, an officer said during a press conference outside the religious center.

"With that knife he stabbed a 24-year-old, what we believed to be a Taiwanese male, in the neck, and he also caused lacerations to an older gentleman also escorting him from the premises", police said.

The boy was detained at the scene, New South Wales police said in a report.

Both victims were members of the Scientology center.

"He had a lawful reason to be here originally and they've asked him to leave for various reasons, which we still need to get to the bottom of and speak to staff here on premises", said Detective Chief Inspector Simon Jones.

A 16-year-old has been arrested after the incident at Chatswood at 12.30pm.

Another man, in his 30s, was treated for minor injuries.

A teenager in custody over the fatal stabbing of a "beloved" member of the Church of Scientology in Sydney was believed to be trying to see his mum.

In video footage of the aftermath of the attack seen by Express.co.uk, police can be seen leading the teenage suspect away from the vast complex on Grenville Street.

The alleged attacker was asked to leave the centre "only and exclusively in relation to a domestic incident" Det Chief Insp Jones said.

'The Church is providing the police with any assistance needed in their investigation'.

"It's a huge building, a lot of people come from around Asia to study here", a young churchgoer told the Australian Associated Press.

While initial reports do suggest that the attack was related to a "domestic incident" it is unclear why the attack occurred on Scientology grounds.

According to ABC Australia, the Chatswood Scientology Centre is the largest Scientology facility outside the U.S and sprawls over a 145,000 square foot area.

The site formerly housed the National Acoustic Laboratory and was purchased by the church for a reported $37m in 2014.

The Chatsworth Scientology Centre, known as the Advanced Organisation and Saint Hill, was opened in September 2016.
