Top 10 New York Jets Head Coach Candidates In 2019

Since firing Todd Bowles, the Jets have shown interest in an extensive list of names as they search for a new head coach.

At last month's NFL owners meetings in Dallas, league officials informed team executives that they would now be enforcing the old rule that requires team executives to request permission from college athletic directors to interview college coaches. Failing to put in the request and get approval could lead to draft picks being taken away or other disciplinary action.

Sources said a ideal storm of the NFL's new enforcement of an old rule has led to the situation where the Jets and Cardinals can't talk to one of their head-coaching candidates.

But USC apparently isn't interested in allowing Kingsbury to interview for the job.

Kingsbury has head-coaching experience, as he was the head coach of Texas Tech from 2013 through 2018, going 35-40 overall and posting a 1-2 record in bowl games. Kingsbury, 39, replaces Tee Martin at USC, who was dismissed by coach Clay Helton in November.

He has a very low buyout, meaning it would not cost the Trojans much to let him pursue an National Football League job, but discussions never even got that far with the Jets and the Cardinals, as USC athletic director Lynn Swann immediately told both teams no.

Before his tenure with the Red Raiders, the former Texas Tech quarterback spent three seasons as an offensive coordinator on Kevin Sumlin's staffs at Houston and Texas A&M.
