6 people arrested in Australia after largest-ever meth seizure in US

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 1,728 kilograms of the drug was seized mid-January at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex along with smaller amounts of cocaine and heroin.

One of the containers authorities say contained close to two tons of methamphetamine and other drugs.

The drugs were hidden in metal boxes and falsely labelled as loudspeakers.

The drugs were detected by United States authorities on January 9 with 25kgs of cocaine and 5kgs of heroin also located.

The Australian Federal Police said that a joint investigation led the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to uncover 1.7 tonnes of drugs in California last month.

Two U.S. citizens and four Australian citizens were arrested as part of the bust.

A US-based organised crime syndicate is being investigated over the shipment.

Authorities are warning that worldwide drug syndicates are stepping up efforts to get their drugs into Australia. This is now flagging the intent Australia is now being targeted. Two of those arrested, a 52-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, are Americans.

They face various charges, including attempting to import illegal drugs, and face maximum sentences of life in prison in Australia if convicted.

"This is the biggest ever seizure of methamphetamine. stopped before it had a chance to reach Australian streets", said AFP Asst.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Bruce Hill told a news conference in Melbourne that police now believe Mexican cartels are actively targeting Australia.

"By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the enormous pain these drugs would have caused our community", AFP Assistant Commissioner Bruce Hill told reporters.

Five search warrants have also been executed in British Columbia in Canada where a significant amount of property, believed to be proceeds of crime, have been seized.

According to authorities in the Australian state of Victoria, around 2 tons of meth is consumed in the state every year.

"This is the largest seizure of ice bound for Australia ever".
