Darren Weir faces ban of at least 4 years

Australian trainer Darren Weir is expected to be handed a lengthy ban after Racing Victoria stewards concluded their hearing into the show cause notices issued against him.

A five-time Melbourne premiership victor, Weir gained worldwide fame as the trainer of 2015 Melbourne Cup victor Prince Of Penzance.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will ultimately decide on the penalty, with Weir indicating he will not fight the charges, however the RAD Board can either reduce or extend the penalty upon hearing the submissions from Weir's legal counsel and the stewards' legal counsel.

Darren Weir is facing serious charges of possessing three electrical apparatus and conduct prejudicial to the interests or image of racing.

Weir's assistant, licensed trainer Jarrod McLean, will fight a charge of possessing a jigger and will be allowed to train until a RAD Board hearing.

Racing Victoria charged Weir with possession of the banned devices, along with engaging in conduct prejudicial to the image, interests or welfare of racing.

He will be barred from entering or racing any horses as a trainer or owner until the charges are determined, Racing Victoria's executive general manager for integrity Jamie Stier said in a statement Tuesday.

The jiggers were found when stewards and officers from Victoria Police's sports integrity unit raided Weir's stables at Ballarat and Warrnambool on Wednesday last week and arrested the pair.

"They [the stewards] would've considered the significance of the charges, the reputation of racing - and let's be clear: there's three charges in relation to electronic apparatus, and one relating to the reputation and integrity of the sport", Stier told RSN 927's Racing Pulse on Tuesday morning.

Weir must divest himself of any registered ownership interest in a registered horse, prior to that horse being permitted to accept for any race.

A number of Weir-trained horses have already been transferred to other trainers ahead of the Sandown meeting including Monarch Court to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Boomstock to Mick Price with Amerock and Signature Street now in the care of Mitchell Freedman.

Authorities will not pursue charges against stable employee, Tyson Kermond, who was also charged last week for failing to give evidence.
