'Empire' Star Jussie Smollet's Family Breaks Their Silence Following Attack

According to a report from That Grape Juice, Smollett had previously received an anonymous death threat in the mail, in which a drawing of him getting shot was accompanied by his name and a homophobic slur. The 36-year-old actor was subsequently hospitalized and released, local authorities said.

In regards to his recovery, Howard said: "I heard he's getting better, you know he's angry but I know Jussie, and Jussie's anger will dissipate and he will forgive these people for what they did".

Jussie Smollett's family is speaking out days after the Empire star was targeted in an apparent hate crime attack.

The family also thanks their "village" for the support they have been shown and they thank God for seeing Jussie "through this cowardly attack alive". "Hateful words lead to hateful actions", the Smollett family's statement continues.

The statement concludes, "Oftentimes ending fatally, these are inhumane acts of domestic terrorism and they should be treated as such".

After expressing their warning that attacks like this will continue to happen until Americans start to hold each other accountable, the family went on to say that it starts with hateful words. Radical love is the only solution, but passivity will be our downfall.

Chicago has one of the nation's most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses and in train tunnels. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice". "He explained to them why he had the rope around his neck, and the officers closed their body cams at his request, because they were in his private residence".

The camera did not capture the attack itself, but police said that they are still reviewing camera footage from the area. Guglielmi stressed that the people are not considered suspects and that police want to question them because they were in the vicinity and might have information that could be useful to the investigation.

Elgas added that Chicago police have a security image of Smollett alone inside a Subway sandwich shop near the location of the reported crime, and that cops also obtained additional video placing him at the scene of the crime.
