Former U.S. security officials to oppose emergency declaration

The three states are among 16 that are suing the president over his emergency declaration.

Almost 60 former senior US national security officials on Monday rejected President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration, saying there was "no factual basis" to circumvent Congress to build his long-promised border wall.

Diverting funds to the project will 'undermine USA national security and foreign policy interests, ' the 58 ex-officials wrote in the letter, first reported by the Washington Post.

The statement notes that there is no proof of a border emergency such as a surge in terrorism or violent crime, and illegal border crossings are at a almost 40-year low.

The president maintains that a wall is needed to stem irregular immigration and the flow of illicit drugs into the country.

The joint statement by 58 former diplomats, Cabinet secretaries, intelligence officers and civil servants such as Madeleine Albright, former defense secretary Chuck Hagel and John Kerry, censures Trump's declaration, saying that there is no security issue at the U.S. -Mexico border, the Washington Post reported.

Democrats in the House of Representatives are preparing to vote on a resolution to void the declaration. House Democrats introduced a resolution last week to block his effort to build a wall through his emergency powers, even though Trump has promised to veto the measure.

The president reminded them that their voters supported the idea of more physical barriers at the Southern border.

"I want to make sure that the resolution of disapproval is exactly what I think it is, because if it is as I understand it to be, I will likely be supporting the resolution to disapprove of the action", Murkowski reportedly said Friday.

President Donald Trump speaks about "the national security and humanitarian crisis on our southern border" and declare a national emergency as a means to circumvent Congress and build additional border barriers, at the White House on February 15 in Washington, D.C. almost two dozen former Republican members of Congress are urging the GOP to abandon Trump in his national emergency declaration.

The move allows the president to tap into funds from the Pentagon and other budgets.
