Human remains found after cargo plane crashes in Anahuac

Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne described the crash as "total devastation" during a press conference on Saturday afternoon. "There's everything from cardboard boxes to women's clothing and bed sheets", Hawthorne said.

Search and recovery crews have recovered one body and the search continued Sunday for two more at the site where a Boeing 767 cargo plane crashed into a coastal bay near Houston with three people aboard.

The sheriff said recovering pieces of the plane and its black box containing flight data records will be hard in muddy marshland that extends to about 5 feet deep in the area.

The plane, which was minutes away from landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, crashed into muddy marshland and can only be accessed by air boats. New York-based Atlas Air Worldwide, which operated the plane on Amazon's behalf, said it is cooperating fully with the FAA and the NTSB.

Boeing said it was saddened to hear about the crash.

The plane was nearing a line of thunderstorms in an area of turbulence when it went down, said a person familiar with the still-preliminary data being collected. The sheriff said first responders found debris no larger than 50 feet across.

The depth of the water where the plane crashed is up to 5 feet.

The 767 lost radar and radio contact with controllers about 1:45 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and will be lead an investigation, Lunsford said.

Dive teams are searching for the black box.

The Houston Police Department said they're sending its marine officers to the seen and the Harris County Sheriff's Office is sending personnel to assist in the crash.

The 767, which has a payload of 115,700 pounds and a range of 3,255 miles, is used by Federal Express, UPS, DHL, according to Boeing.

The plane then flew for China Airlines and LAN Airlines and ended its service as a passenger jet in 2014.
