Iran claims to foil bid by unnamed 'enemies' to sabotage missiles

Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh noted in his speech on 24 February that Iranian military technology had reached a peak and allows the country to infiltrate USA military systems, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The United States pulled out of an global agreement on Iran's nuclear programme in May and reimposed harsh sanctions on Tehran. All these are opening the curtain for Iran's annual military drill.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards on Sunday accused "enemies" of the Islamic Republic of trying to sabotage the country's missiles so that they would "explode mid-air" but said the bid was foiled. On top of this, Iran maintains close ties to various regional militias, including the Lebanese Shiite Muslim Hezbollah movement, which commands its own extensive array of missiles, as do Tehran's other allies in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, though Iranian officials have denied directly supplying these groups.

Earlier this week, Hajizadeh rejected U.S. officials' recent claims that Washington has managed to sabotage Tehran's missile program as "a very big lie". Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi commander of the Iranian Navy, said the manoeuvres began yesterday on Thursday, February 21, and will go on until next week on March 1. This system will surprise the enemies as they can not identify the location where the missiles are launched.

Iran last week confirmed that it had failed twice in the past two months to launch a satellite into orbit. The maneuvers came as United States aircraft carriers returned to the region after a long absence.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

While the United Nations nuclear watchdog has said that Tehran has complied with the deal, the USA and others have said that without articles concerning the missile programme and other regional actions the deal falls short. On Saturday, Iran launched surface-to-surface missiles.

Bahrain, a key US ally in the Gulf, hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet with around 7,800 US military personnel deployed in the country, as well as a British naval base.

It did not specify the missile's range.
