Mertens upsets Halep in Qatar Open final for biggest title

When you have the athleticism to match your aggression, rest assured you are blessed with a killer combination.

Elise Mertens had a big win in the previous round as she beat the number 5 seed, Kiki Bertens, in straight sets.

Halep is now scheduled to Mertens, who secured a surprise victory over the tournament's third seed, Germany's Angelique Kerber.

The Romanian prevailed, however, beating Svitolina 6-4 in the final set to progress to tomorrow's final.

But Halep summoned her powers of recovery to fend off all three points and went on to clinch five straight and the remarkable victory.

"Just that I don't want to give up".

"I just look at round per round, and I look at the opponents", Mertens said.

Halep had eased to victory over Lesia Tsurenko in her first match under the guidance of new coach Thierry Van Cleemput and the Romanian raced into a 4-0 lead over Goerges. Svitolina lost the ground completely and she suffered another break at 4-4 when her forehand landed long.

"Yeah, I'm happy because I didn't give up, and the two finals that I played against her in Rome I gave up and I was not ready to fight". "I am very happy, honestly", said Halep.

The Belgian was quick out of the gates in the first set in the first career meeting between the two players, as she built a 4-1 lead only to see the defending Wimbledon champion rally for parity at 4-4. She was pushing the ball.

Elise kept her focus in the third set, serving well and scoring two breaks in games four and six, winning five games in a row and sealing the deal with a service victor at 5-1 for one of her career-best wins.

But Svitolina was not done yet and she pulled another gear in the second set, won 6-3.

After taking the second set, Svitolina claimed an early break again in the final set while also frustrating her opponent with her relentless court coverage.

"Well, yeah, a year ago I was really disappointed that I had to pull out".

"So today I was more motivated".

"Yes, I knew it will be a great match".

"I'm expecting a tough match, definitely", the Ukrainian told the WTA Tour website.

"I try not to think of it".

Halep is going to start this match as the favourite. The final is always a tough one with extra pressure, extra emotions.
