Benitez talks Longstaff, Everton, home form and more Read Newcastle

"When you have a young player doing so well, it's worse".

Everton scored twice in the first half before conceding three in the second as Ayoze Perez scored a late double for Newcastle to win 3-2 in the English Premier League, on a Saturday afternoon that Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will want to forget.

Benitez spoke about the recent home form: "At the beginning, we played top sides, but now we have gained confidence we didn't have before".

Benitez admitted his side may have experienced overconfidence before their 2-0 defeat against West Ham United but claims it will not happen again.

"The team is playing well, the fans are supporting the players & the atmosphere has been positive".

"After their display at Anfield in December, where they lost to a 96th-minute goal, it was probably their most committed performance of the season". Obviously we are really disappointed with the injury, but at least he's taken it really well in terms of his approach.

And the crowd went into raptures when Perez slotted home after coming back from an offside position to clinch an important three points.

"There were five Newcastle players offside when the ball came back in for the third goal" said Everton's shell-shocked manager Marco Silva.

"I was trying to avoid over-confidence in the group before the West Ham game but sometimes you can't", Benitez said in his pre-match press conference.

Yet, ultimately, it was Everton manager Marco Silva who was left complaining to referee Lee Mason at the final whistle, claiming that Rondon had been offside when Perez scored the victor.

And Benitez hopes that the 21-year-old will be fit in around three months.

"I said we had to be as aggressive in the second half as we were in the first and we did not do that".

The Merseyside club now sit 10th in the Premier League table and six points off seventh, while they managed to draw with rivals Liverpool 0-0 in their last game at Goodison Park.
