Late Watford winner ruins Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers' Premier League return

Vardy returned to something like his best last season, scoring 20 league goals as Leicester finished ninth under previous boss Claude Puel.

Andre Gray scored an injury-time victor for the Hornets after Jamie Vardy had cancelled out Troy Deeney's early opener.

But the former Liverpool boss was given a tough welcome back to the Premier League when substitute Gray pounced on Troy Deeney's fine through ball.

Vardy has registered just nine goals in the league this term, but Rodgers has vowed to find a style of play that suits both the team and the attributes of their main goal threat.

Watford had taken the lead through Deeney in the fifth minute as the striker got his body across Wes Morgan and rose well to head home Gerard Deulofeu's whipped ball from a free kick for his first goal in 10 matches at Vicarage Road.

Harvey Barnes wasted an opening and the half ended without Leicester having a shot on target, Wilfred Ndidi finally giving Ben Foster a comfortable save to make in the 51st minute.

After Schmeichel mishit a pass, Deeney sent substitute Gray clear to score the victor for the second home Premier League game in a row, leaving Rodgers furious. Vardy positioned himself in between the two centre-backs and Youri Tielemans' through-ball was ideal for the former England striker to race on to and clip a smart first-time finish past Foster.

Rodgers' side missed the chance to snatch all three points when captain Morgan glanced James Maddison's cross wide, and it proved costly.

What does it mean?

Asked if he could return to Celtic as manager, Northern Irishman Rodgers said: "Yes".

A delighted Javi Gracia saw his side move level on points with Wolves in seventh for what could be a Europa League place depending on who wins the FA Cup.

But Rodgers could not hide his frustration on the touchline when Schmeichel sloppily gave the ball away to allow Deeney and Gray to link up for the victor.
