'No agreement was reached' at Trump, Kim summit - White House

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un kept his trusted sister close by Thursday as he met with President Donald Trump for their historic nuclear summit in Vietnam. Tempering expectations, Trump opened by declaring he was in "no rush".

"Speed's not that important to me", he said as he began talks with Mr Kim at the Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel on Wednesday.

"It occurs to us that there may not be a need to continue", she said, adding that North Korea had taken "many steps" to try to reach a deal.

The allies suspended a number of military drills before and after the first Trump-Kim summit previous year to encourage talks with North Korea, which denounced the exercises as training for invasion.

"I think no matter what happens we're going to ultimately have a deal that's really good for Chairman Kim and his country and for us.I think ultimately that's what's going to happen", Trump said.

"That might be the best answer you've ever heard", Trump responded after the remark. Speaking through an interpreter, Kim said he is "confident of achieving the great results that everyone will welcome".

"I'm sure that all of them will be watching the moment that we are sitting together side by side as if they are watching a fantasy movie".

Asked by a member of the White House press pool about his outlook for Thursday's summit, Kim said: "It's too early to say".

Both leaders motorcades roared away from the downtown Hanoi summit site within minutes of each other after both a lunch and the signing ceremony were scuttled.

After the short Q&A session with journalists, Kim and Trump sat one-on-one at the negotiating table for about half an hour, with only translators being present.

Earlier Thursday, Kim said he wouldn't be holding a summit with Trump if he weren't willing to make good on his denuclearization pledge. Still, both offered optimistic words before Wednesday's dinner. Cohen has been sentenced to three years in prison for lying to Congress.

The US President told reporters he thought the talks would be very successful - but warned he was "not walking back on denuclearisation".

The South Korean government has tried to solve the denuclearization issue through the South-North talks, including the announcement of Panmunjeom Declaration containing the "complete denuclearization" in April a year ago, which South Korean people welcomed warmly.

In Yongbyon, North Korea has launched a separate nuclear energy program based on light water reactors to generate electricity.

Donald Trump has conceded that his talks in Hanoi with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un might not lead to an immediate breakthrough on disarmament, but was hopeful for the long-term future of bilateral relations. The facts did not support that claim.

The U.S. side said "that wouldn't work", he said, adding that North Korea was unwilling to completely freeze its weapons programs.

Their summit in Singapore in June was the first meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader and ended with fanfare but little substance. A peace declaration would amount to a political statement, ostensibly teeing up talks for a formal peace treaty that would involve other nations.

Washington had previously said that North Korea had to unilaterally give up its nuclear weapons before there could be any sanctions relief.
