Sergio Ramos banned additional European match for yellow card

- Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos has been given two-game European ban for deliberate booking, AFP reported on February 28, 2019.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been given an additional one-game ban by UEFA after he was found guilty of purposely picking up a yellow card during the first leg of their Champions League match against Ajax.

Captain Ramos was booked in the 89th minute of Madrid's 2-1 first leg last-16 victory in Amsterdam for a foul on Kasper Dolberg, which meant he would therefore miss the second leg at the Bernabeu.

Alas, it was not, as Uefa have punished his cynical attempt at clearing his disciplinary record by banning him for the first leg of the quarter-final, assuming Madrid go through. They set a precedent last season when Real full-back Dani Carvajal was suspended for two games after initially earning a booking in the group stage.

But straight after the game, he had appeared to admit that he got himself booked on goal.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't force (the booking)", admitted the defender.

Speaking directly after the final whistle, Ramos was asked about the challenge and said, "there are times in football when you have to take complicated decisions and that is what I did".

Real Madrid, who are seeking a fourth consecutive Champions League trophy, entertain Ajax on 5 March.

The Premier League club were fined 16,000 euros ($18,212) after their supporters blocked stairways and threw objects.

In a separate case, PSG will also have to pay €25,000 for the late kick-off against Red Star Belgrade in December, while head coach Thomas Tuchel has been issued a one-match suspended touchline ban for improper conduct.
