Web inventor calls for 'fight' against hacking, hate on its 30th anniversary

As of late 2018, half of the world was online, with the other half often struggling to secure access.

"If we give up on building a better web now, then the web will not have failed us - we will have failed the web", he said.

In an open letter to mark the occasion, Mr Berners-Lee made a fairly damaging assessment of his creation, 30 years on, warning: "I'm very concerned about nastiness and misinformation spreading".

Back in November, Berners-Lee unveiled the 'Contract for the Web,' which asks governments, companies, and citizens around the world to commit to protecting the freedoms and rights of internet users.

In the years that followed, Berners-Lee wrote the first HTML language, the HTTP application, and the first web browser.

In brief: Thirty years ago this week, Tim Berners-Lee proposed an information management system that would eventually become the World Wide Web we know today.

English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee 3rd left on the podium best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web attends an event at the CERN in Meyrin near Geneva Switzerland

Berners-Lee reminisced about how he was really out to get disparate computer systems to talk to one another, and resolve the "burning frustration" over a "lack of interoperability" of documentation from disparate computing systems used at CERN in the late 1980s. As The Associated Press reports, "Berners-Lee has since become a sort of father figure for the internet community, been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and named as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century by Time magazine". "It's our journey from digital adolescence to a more mature, responsible, and inclusive future".

These are deliberate, malicious intent, such as state-sponsored hacking and attacks, criminal behaviour, and online harassment.

Many websites from the early days of the Web have gone dark, but the first one is still live.

In 1992, Berners-Lee needed a photo to test out the World Wide Web's new image-hosting capabilities.

The web also fuels the risky spread of misinformation; search engine optimization tactics can push fake news stories to the top of Google search results, feeding internet users with falsities. Berners-Lee says there ought to be other incentives or ways to make money, though he doesn't go into detail on how that might take shape.
