At least 28 people dead in Madeira tourist bus crash

Most if not all of the dead have been described as Germans.

Some 28 people are reported to have died after a coach went off the road in a hotel district on the holiday island of Madeira on Wednesday afternoon.

At least fourteen ambulances are said to be at the scene, next to Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden. "I can not face the suffering of these people", Filipe Sousa, the mayor of Canico where the accident happened, told media.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

The majority of passengers on the bus were reportedly from Germany.

Though the exact details of the group are still unknown, Telegraph reports that the bus was carrying 55 passengers and one guide, and was headed towards Funchal.

Per The Telegraph, Sousa said, "I have no words to describe what happened".

Local residents said the weather was fine at the time of the accident, which happened while it was still light, in the early evening.

He said all the tourists in the bus were German but it was not clear if the fatalities occurred only in the bus.
