Christian Wade lands National Football League spot

Former England and Wasps wing Christian Wade has signed for the Buffalo Bills as he pursues his dream of forging a career in the National Football League, the team announced on Monday.

He has been training in Florida since December, and while he was not signed by a team out-right, having been placed with the Bills, Wade has a full year to impress with no risk of being dropped.

He told a conference call: "With the recent news I'm completely lost for words".

Wade was allocated to the Bills as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program and has been slated as a potential running back on the field.

Wade, ran in 82 tries for Wasps during his spell with the club, making him the third highest try scorer in the history of England's top division.

In 2016, Wade equaled a Premiership record with six tries in a single match against Worcester. Every week that has gone by has exceeded my expectations. [Practice squad] is not really an aim for me.

Wade will have the challenge of dealing with the elements in Buffalo, but he is relishing tackling the colder temperatures and getting to know the Bills' passionate fanbase, many of whom take to jumping through tables during the pre-game tailgates.

"I've put a post on Instagram but couldn't come up with a caption for it". I'm still learning, still trying to get better, just pushing for the best. For me this is another step closer to my dream and what I set out to achieve from the start. Every time I think about [it], I start to well up.

It's a path that has been trod previously by former England 7s worldwide Alex Gray and ex-Worcester Warriors lock Christian Scotland-Williamson.

Scotland-Williamson went on to sign a reserves contract with the Steelers at the beginning of this year.
