Since Jan. 1, there have been 626 measles cases recorded in 22 states as of April 19, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.

Dr Shoemack said two of the four new cases were linked to the initial outbreak in Mount Maunganui which began with a young female backpacker from Europe in her 20s, who infected six members of the same social group she had contact with during her visit. New York City health officials on Wednesday reported 61 new cases since late last week, pushing this year's nationwide tally past the 667 cases reported for all of 2014.

The majority of infections have appeared in communities that are largely unvaccinated, according to officials, underscoring the importance of getting the MMR vaccine.

Measles in the USA has climbed to its highest level in 25 years, closing in on 700 cases this year in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines.

Carina Blackmore, Florida's director for the Division of Disease Control and Health Protection, said Florida's measles cases are both linked to global travel.

More than 20 million children a year missed out on measles vaccines across the world in the past eight years, laying a path of exposure to a virus that is now causing disease outbreaks globally, a United Nations report said on Thursday.

Globally, 85% of children received their first dose in 2017 and 67% got the second dose.

By 2000, when there were only 86 cases, measles was declared eliminated from the United States, meaning there was no continuous transmission of the disease for more than 12 months. Under the mandate, anyone who does not get the vaccine risks a $1,398 fine.

A combination of factors has led to the spike in measles cases according to UNICEF, including complacency among parents and "fear or skepticism about vaccines".

Half a million children in the United Kingdom have not been vaccinated against measles amid a rise in online "antivaxx" scare stories.

For most people, measles is not life-threatening.

"All (county) public health officers are working in tandem with the California Department of Public Health" as they investigate the measles cases, Bongiorno said.

Children who have not been given the MMR vaccine could be excluded from school to prevent the spread of disease, the Health Secretary has suggested.

"Before 1989 it was really common practice just to receive one vaccine before age 13", said Dr. Lim.

The CDC stated on Thursday: "A significant factor contributing to the outbreaks in NY is misinformation in the communities about the safety of the measles/mumps/rubella vaccine".
