Cubs’ Jon Lester (hamstring) expected to land on injury list Wednesday

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, left-handed starter Jon Lester is heading to the injured list after leaving the home opener with tightness in his left hamstring.

As many expected after the game, the hamstring issue isn't very serious, but it will cost Lester a start early in the season.

Should they go outside the 40-man (which I doubt given Chatwood's availability) for a fill-in starter or piggyback, Colin Rea offers the most experience (25 career Major League Baseball starts with SD).

Left-handed swingman Mike Montgomery, who made 19 impressive starts previous year to help save the regular season, is on the IL with a "mild" lat strain and eligible to return Monday.

Lester, 35, doubled and later scored from second on a single during the second inning of Monday's 10-0 victory over the Pirates.

During an appearance on 670 The Score, manager Joe Maddon confirmed that the left-hander will miss his next scheduled start against the Angels on Sunday. He said he felt a "cramping sensation" on the scoring play. "Everybody on the training side always kind of thinks of the worst-case scenario, but I don't feel that way", said Lester, who has 14 strikeouts and a 2.57 ERA through 14 innings this season. "Just something was in there grabbing me a little bit".
