Dirk Nowitzki Officially Announces Retirement

Dirk Nowitzki played his final game as a Dallas Maverick last night, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the team's 105-94 loss against the San Antonio Spurs.

He ended with 30 to help the Mavericks overcome Jamal Crawford's 51-point effort in the 120-109 win win over the Suns.

Spurs fans showed plenty of love to the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer, and he said it "felt nearly like a home game".

'It was fantastic again tonight, ' Nowitzki said.

A sellout crowd followed owner Mark Cuban's order of filling the arena early, and cheered from the first possible moment for the player who guided the Mavericks to their only championship eight years ago.

"Wow. I'm a little overwhelmed, as you would think". 'Felt nearly like a home game, honestly'.

In his final game ever, Dirk Nowitzki left the floor smiling wide.

The seven-foot star, a 14-time All-Star and the sixth-highest scorer in National Basketball Association history with 31,540 points, thanked fans for their support during his 21 years at the club. Earlier this season, Sports Illustrated's Jake Fischer explored how hard it was for Nowitzki to prepare for games as a 40-year-old.

It was appropriate that Nowitzki's final game came against the Spurs, who he has had many memorable battles against. He made his retirement announcement following the game. "I want to see how my body feels the last couple of weeks". Hopefully, I got a good photo op'.

And although it lacked the emotional punch of Tuesday's home finale at the AAC in Dallas, the night remained a tribute to Nowitzki and his Hall of Fame career. He made many unpublicized trips to the hospital over the years.

Dallas' season finale, and the career-ender for Nowitzki, is Wednesday night in San Antonio.

The 40-year-old showed his emotion during the game, fighting back tears just before action resumed at the start of the second quarter following a tribute video that detailed his holiday visit to a children's hospital.
