Indian police attack IS suspected homes after Sri Lanka blasts

The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the top body of Islamic scholars in Sri Lanka, said they supported a short-term ban on security grounds, but opposed any attempt to legislate against face veils.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena appointed on Monday Chandana Wickramaratne as the country's new acting police chief in light of the deadly Easter Sunday terror attacks, the Ada Derana news portal reported, citing the president's office.

On Friday President Sirisena said Zahran Hashim, a radical preacher suspected of being the ringleader, was killed in the explosion at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo.

According to reports, the release said that any form of face cover "that will hinder the identification of a person is banned under emergency regulations".

Two cabinet ministers and two opposition lawmakers confirmed to Reuters that they were aware of the latest security alert. People either prayed near churches or in homes even as curfew in the country was lifted, barring the areas in Kalmunai, Sammanthurai and Chavalakade.

Scores of suspected Islamic extremists have been arrested since the Easter weekend slaughter, which killed over 250 people.

More than 100 people, including foreigners from Syria and Egypt, have been detained for questioning for questioning over the Easter attacks.

"Today during this Mass we are paying attention to last Sunday's tragedy and we try to understand it", he said.

Police entered the mosque, located in Kattankudy in eastern Sri Lanka, on Sunday afternoon and stopped an interview with foreign journalists and officials at the mosque.

Another raid in the region targeted a house where authorities said Hashim and the other suicide bombers filmed a pledge of allegiance to Daesh before staging their attacks.

MPs have been calling for the ban on the burqa and niqab since the country's newfound calm was shattered by the sectarian attacks.

A week after terrorist attacks hit churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, Catholic churches are shuttered for Divine Mercy Sunday.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, said the church may not be able to stop people from taking the law into their own hands unless the government conducts a more thorough investigation and does more to prevent further attacks.

Sri Lanka's military said the gunfire and later suicide blasts killed 15 people, including six children.

Two further local Islamist groups with suspected links to ISIS-National Thowfeek Jamaath and Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim-have been blamed by Sri Lankan authorities.

The video, widely circulated on Sri Lankan social media, shows three men saying in Tamil that they will "teach a lesson" to those who "are destroying Muslims who have come to this part of the country".
