Man charged with throwing child from balcony at Mall of America

Police responded to reports of a 5-year-old child being thrown or pushed from the third floor onto the first floor of the Mall of America Friday morning.

Bloomington Police Chief Jeffrey Potts said the suspect immediately took off running but was quickly found and arrested at the mall.

A 24-year-old Minneapolis man is being held on suspicion of attempted homicide in an apparent attack in which a 5-year-old boy was pushed or thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America.

Potts said police are looking at security video from inside the mall to gather more information. Tina Hailey told the publication she was rounding the corner when she heard a woman screaming, "Oh my god, pray for my son".

A source told WCCO the person who either pushed or threw the boy off the balcony fled the mall and was soon arrested by the Blue Line transit line.

The man, identified by police as Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, was accused in July 2015 of throwing things off the upper level of the mall to the lower level.

He was also convicted of fifth-degree assault, trespassing and interfering with a police officer for an incident in October of 2015. Aranda lives in the Twin Cities' metro area, police said. The woman refused, and the man allegedly threw a glass of water in her face and a glass of tea that struck her leg. He says police don't have an idea about possible motive.

Police said that the incident appears to be isolated. "We're actively trying to figure out why this occurred". His condition was not immediately known.
