As promised, Microsoft has moved the Windows 10 May 2019 Update into the Release Preview Ring, where it will fester for weeks so the firm can ensure there are no quality or reliability issues. Microsoft will ship the last batch of updates for this particular version on Home and Pro SKUs tomorrow, after which consumers are recommended to upgrade to a newer Windows 10 release. "We will increase the amount of time that the May 2019 Update spends in the Release Preview phase, and we will work closely with ecosystem partners during this phase to proactively obtain more early feedback about this release", said the company in a blog post. The update is now available for download and will be shown as "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903" in Windows Update.
At this point, the most recent stable version of Windows 10 is the October 2018 Update (version 1809), with Microsoft getting ready to introduce another major update called May 2019 Update.
Once you complete the steps after version 1903 is available to everyone, your device will gracefully stop getting previews, and the installation will continue to receive quality updates for as long as the feature update is supported.
If you're not part of the Insider program, here's how to join.
Click on Windows Insider Program. To join the Windows Insider Program, click on the Get started button. (If you're wondering why Microsoft doesn't refer to this as "Release Preview", we don't know either.) You'll need to approve some legalese, then reboot your PC-make sure you don't have any documents open. This is essentially where you select the release ring you would like to join.
Members of the Windows Insider program will be able to take advantage of this update starting in mid-April. Along the same line, Windows could also automatically install some security updates.
After you select the ring, Microsoft will ask you confirm the Windows Insider Program agreement. (Seriously, though, it's pretty painless.) For now, if you want to sample the new Windows features, though, use our tips above and dive in! Going forward, Windows 10 users can choose between "check for updates" or simply pause updates for next (up to) 35 days. Additionally, Microsoft will aggressively internally deploy the May 2019 Update during the Release Preview period and encourage employees to do the same on their personal devices.
