Oliver North: Won't Serve 2nd Term as NRA President

President Trump chose the backdrop of the National Rifle Association's leadership forum to announce his latest blow to multilateral institutions.

North said he was approached by board members as president who were concerned about amounts of money being paid by the NRA to outside groups, and stated that there were allegations of financial mismanagement by 'senior NRA officers. North himself was not at the meeting, but NRA First Vice President Richard Childress read his surprise announcement.

In a statement read to NRA members at the group's annual convention, North made it clear he was pushed out by the NRA's board of directors.

The NRA endorsed Trump for president during its May 2016 convention in Louisville, Ky., at which the then-presidential candidate said if more individuals carried guns, fewer people would die in mass shootings like the one in San Bernardino, Calif., months before.

In the lawsuit, the NRA claimed Ackerman McQueen did not justify its billings with records, according to the Journal.

North, 75, who was named by the NRA as its president in May 2018, was a pivotal figure in the Iran-Contra affair involving secret sales of arms to Iran by Republican President Ronald Reagan's administration and the unlawful diversion of the proceeds to Nicaraguan rebels.

He said that after starting as president in September 2018, he was "confronted by NRA board members and donors" about how much the association was paying for an outside law firm.

He said he and others tried to raise concerns, but they were rebuffed repeatedly.

The Wall Street Journal reports that North, who became NRA president previous year, defended himself in his own letter to the board Thursday, indicating that his actions were "for the good of the NRA".

The NRA has been plunged into internal turmoil at a vulnerable time.

The NRA has been beset by legal and financial challenges.

One NRATV segment in particular seemed to be the last straw for some members: It took the children's show "Thomas & Friends" to task for adding some ethnically and gender diverse characters to its lineup of talking locomotives and other vehicles. He began by using standard NRA talking points, going after the mainstream media and lawmakers who seek to restrict gun rights. "The bottom line is this: As the NRA plummets, the gun safety movement just keeps growing".

Winkler said that the group had scored some victories under Trump, including the appointment of two Supreme Court justices who may be open to striking down gun laws.

The NRA presidency has previously been a ceremonial post, but the New York Times reported North had asked for it to be a paid position.

North had contacted LaPierre's top staff adviser this week, demanding the CEO's resignation, and purportedly offering an excellent retirement package if LaPierre would agree both to step down and to support North's bid for re-election as president.
