"I would ask that anyone who was within Chester Street, or the west end of Edinburgh on Wednesday evening, and who saw anyone, or anything suspicious, to contact the police immediately". He was 42-years-old.

Someone else tweeted: "Had a near heart attack when I heard Bradley WELSH (from T2 Trainspotting) was killed".

The Edinburgh Police Division said officers were called to the incident following a report of a disturbance.

His death is being treated as suspicious and inquiries are continuing.

"The Capital remains a safe place to live, work and visit and while this investigation continues, uniformed officers will maintain a high-visibility presence in the Chester Street and the West End to offer reassurance and engage with local residents and business staff".

There was no immediate word on survivors.

Bradley is popular for his role as a gangland boss in Trainspotting 2 and was a former British ABA lightweight boxing champion.

Mr Welsh was friends with Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh who led tributes to the actor following his death.

Bradley also featured in Danny Dyer " s 2008 Deadliest Men series, where he featured on the series as "Britain's youngest criminal mastermind' at the age of just 17.

Connaire Wallace wrote on Twitter: "Think it would be no less than Brad deserves to have a 48th minute applause this Sunday in our match against Celtic with "One Bradley Welsh" ringing around the stands".

Mr Welsh's partner and young daughter were at home in the flat when he was targeted after leaving the Holyrood Boxing Gym, which he founded. Road closed off. We have been told to go inside.

"They said "there's a gunshot wound to the head somewhere".

The writer tweeted: "Goodbye my awesome and handsome friend".

'Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way'.

He's a fairly well-known figure in his area, and many have commented on social media about Bradley Welsh's passing.

Fans of ITV's The Chase were in shock as the news broke, mistakenly believing it was quiz show host Bradley Walsh who had been gunned down.
