Hockey fans are waiting on some big news from the Detroit Red Wings.
After his announcement in September, Yzerman remained with Tampa Bay in an advisory role, saying the new role would allow him to spend more time with his family, who remained in metro Detroit since he took the Tampa Bay job in 2010.
After Tampa was eliminated in the first round earlier this week by Columbus, it appears to have changed the timeline for Yzerman. "However, sources say Holland has been contacted by other teams, including Edmonton and Seattle", Dreger reported. I will be forever grateful for the leadership and vision he provided the Tampa Bay Lightning during his time here and most of all, for the opportunity he presented me to grow as a hockey executive.
Yzerman led the Lightning to one Stanley Cup Final in 2015 and won the NHL General Manager of the Year award that season.
Detroit has spent the past three seasons in mediocrity, and hope Yzerman can set the team straight.
That immediately reheated speculation that had simmered all season over not if, but when Yzerman might return to the Red Wings, a proud franchise that has missed the playoffs the past three seasons. Eight of those seasons he served as the Lightning's general manager.
Detroit drafted Yzerman No. 4 overall in 1983 and he helped turn around the franchise. Dylan Larkin looked returned to form after a lackluster 2016 season, notching a career-high 73 points - 32 of which came on goals.
"This is a truly exciting day for the Detroit Red Wings, we are thrilled to welcome Steve Yzerman back to Hockeytown", said Ilitch. The Red Wings may not be in a position to fleece teams in trades just yet, but Yzerman has a window to get to that point and create a roster he thinks will succeed.
