Bodies of missing Calgary mother and toddler found, suspect in custody

After what they called a "lengthy and complex investigation", Calgary police believe they have located the bodies of a missing woman and her 22-month-old daughter, and taken a suspect into custody.

The bodies of a woman and child, believed to be Lovett and Sanderson, were recovered by police about 4 a.m. Monday in a wooded area near Grizzly Creek, along Highway 40, west of Calgary.

"The last place anyone saw either of them was in Cranston on the evening of Tuesday, April 16, 2019, and the last activity on Jasmine's financial accounts was two days later".

Family members of the victims were devastated to learn the lives of Lovett and Sanderson had reached a tragic end.

April 27: The search for Jasmine and Aliyah is suspended as heavy snowfall hits areas of Bragg Creek and Kananaskis.

After the autopsy, the identities of the bodies will be officially announced, but the cause of death isn't expected to be released.

Leeming was arrested for the first time on April 25, when he was identified as the only suspect by authorities. The suspect was the same man taken into custody two weeks ago in relation to the investigation.

"Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Calgary Police Service as well as those who have worked diligently in the search for Jasmine and her baby girl Aliyah", the family's statement reads.

Police had previously told Postmedia on Monday morning that the search for the pair remained stalled once again to start the new week.

Ms Lovett's family said their lives had been "devastated and our hearts are heavy" following the discovery of their bodies.

The mother, Lovett, was in her mid-20s while young Sanderson was just two-years-old. Our hearts are shattered and we continue to seek answers to the questions many of you are asking.

Leeming, who has said he is the primary suspect in the case, has spoken to Postmedia multiple times since he was arrested on April 25 in connection with the case and released the next day without charges. He said he was on a date with another woman when the pair vanished. "I would like, obviously, for them to be found and for me to be clear of this".

Schiavetta said that police believe the suspect and Lovett were in a relationship and that the murder was "motivated by domestic-related matters".

Police in Calgary believe they have found the bodies of a missing woman and toddler who were reported missing almost two weeks ago. That was expected to happen later Monday or Tuesday.
