Finally, 'Avengers: Endgame' dethroned. Box office has a new king

John Wick: Chapter 3 also surpassed the $30 million opening weekend of John Wick: Chapter Two. And should there be a Chapter 4.

"Avengers" took in an estimated domestic total of $29.4 million in its fourth weekend out, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations estimated Sunday, bringing its worldwide total to $2.61 billion, just shy of the $2.79 billion "Avatar" earned in 2009.

The second frame of Warner Bros.' "Detective Pikachu" will likely take third with about $22 million. Halle Berry and Laurence Fisburne also star.

What do you think about John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum overthrowing the Avengers at the box office?

Or, rather, the legendary lethal assassin that he has been playing for the past few years; John Wick. Parabellum came in strong with a $57 million opening weekend. Domestically, where the film has grossed $711 million, it's now second only to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($937 million) and globally, with $2.6 billion, it's still second to "Avatar" ($2.8 billion).

This all led to "John Wick" taking down the powerful "Endgame".

"A Dog's Journey" from Universal placed fourth, at $8 million. That movie debuted with $18 million and went on to earn $64 million at the domestic box office.

Honestly, despite the dark and violent subject material of the films, everyone wants Keanu Reeves to succeed, and these John Wick movies bring out the best in Keanu's supportive audience - there's something very underdog about both the films and the actor. "It's tough when one movie over performs by this kind of magnitude". The teen drama stars "Grown-ish's" Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton and follows a young couple that falls in love despite one of their families facing deportation.

It's a far cry from the days of "The Fault in Our Stars'" $48 million debut in 2014, and even the last film based on a Nicola Yoon novel, "Everything, Everything", which opened to over $11 million in 2017. The Pokemon adaptation with Ryan Reynolds has generated $94 million in North America.

In fifth was "The Hustle" from United Artists, at $6.1 million. Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway co-star in the comedy, which has made $23 million to date.
