Florida teachers can arm themselves under new gun bill

Florida teachers can arm themselves under new gun bill

Andrew Pollack, father of a Parkland shooting victim, discusses the push to arm Florida teachers on 'The Story'.

With pressure coming from Governor Ron DeSantis, who promised supporters he would ban so-called sanctuary cities, Republican leaders in both chambers are scrambling to pass a plan before the session ends this week. A similar bill already passed through the state Senate last week. "It allows the good guy to stop the bad", he said.

"I hope that we can get through this before it's time to be back in here tomorrow morning", the Miami Lakes Republican said.

Texting while driving has been a controversial issue in Florida for years and the days of the sunshine state lagging behind most of the country seems to be over. Local law enforcement agencies can and should work with the federal government to ensure that accountability and justice are one in our state. School districts must first opt in, and the state's largest, Miami-Dade, has said it won't. "He or she will be there when a police officer is not".

It would provide a regulatory framework that includes requiring licenses for people or businesses that want to grow hemp and requiring them to provide detailed information about where hemp would be cultivated.

As for numerous smaller, more conservative and predominantly rural counties "up north", the reverse will happen, meaning that, for example, your children in school in Fort Lauderdale will not be looking at an armed teacher every day, but your brother's kids who live up in Ocala most likely will be.

"The Broward County School Board voted on a resolution against arming teachers in March 2018", Superintendent Robert Runcie said.

The bill was strongly opposed by teachers unions, and school boards in some of Florida's most populous counties have voted against joining the guardian program, preferring instead to leave the security job to trained police officers.

Suffice it to say that most law enforcement officers, public officials, educators, teachers, parents, and students - particularly here in South Florida - believe that arming teachers is pure folly.
