'It is over:' Republicans close ranks at Barr hearing

Barr's absence appeared to antagonize Pelosi, Trump's Democratic nemesis in Congress, who accused the attorney general of misleading lawmakers.

"The president could terminate that proceeding, and it would not be a corrupt intent, because he was being falsely accused". "That is the road to tyranny", the former secretary of state told Maddow.

It emerged on Tuesday, however, that when Barr said this, he was already in possession of a March 27 letter from Mueller outlining the special counsel's frustrations.

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately return calls for comment.

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyer Emmet Flood accused Mueller and his special counsel's office (SCO) of politicizing their report when they wrote that "we are unable to reach that judgment" that the president did not commit obstruction of justice.

Flood reiterated that point in a letter seen by Reuters, saying Trump's decision to let advisers cooperate when Mueller was conducting his investigation did not extend to congressional oversight investigations now that the inquiry had been completed.

"If anybody else did that, it would be considered a crime", Pelosi said.

Democrats have argued Trump waived the right to assert executive privilege - which allows a president to withhold information about internal executive branch deliberations from other branches of government - by allowing advisers to cooperate extensively with Mueller. He declined to attend a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday, and Democrats have threatened to charge him with contempt of Congress for refusing to appear at the hearing. Nadler said he would move forward with a contempt citation as soon as Monday.

"Chicken Barr should have shown up today", Cohen said.

Clinton warned that Barr's views placed America's democratic system under threat. Beginning with the May 1st visit to the Senate to answer questions related to the Mueller investigation and Barr's handling of the Mueller end-product report document, Democrats began insulting the Attorney General, demanding his resignation and calling him and other Trump staffers scandalous names.

The report detailed a series of actions by Trump to impede the probe, but did not make a conclusion on whether those actions constituted the crime of obstruction. Democrats are fearful of the Trump administration since it was cleared by Mueller of any charges related to collusion or obstruction of justice following the long-lasting investigation.
