Korea fires short-range missiles into East Sea

North Korean state media on Friday chided a weeklong Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense drill by the US Forces Korea, calling on the South Korean government to "behave with discretion".

The projectiles were fired into the Sea of Japan, and did not travel more than 120 miles, according to the South Korean report on the incident.

North Korea has fired at least one short-range missile from the east coast city of Wonsan towards the east, with South Korea's military confirming the incident. No other details about the weapons were immediately available, but a short-range missile test would not violate worldwide sanctions on North Korea's missile program. The Japanese leader also plans to "talk frankly on all the agendas" to be raised by North Korea, they said.

These short-range projectiles do not appear to violate that self-imposed moratorium, and may instead be a way to register Mr Kim's displeasure with Washington without having the diplomacy collapse.

The 2020 hopeful said he believes the United States needs to "put all of the pressure that we can" on North Korea, both economically and politically.

If confirmed, the launch would be the first North Korean missile test since 2017 - and since Mr. Trump began talks with Mr. Kim.

Their summit in Hanoi, Vietnam in February ended without an agreement.

South Korea's presidency urged North Korea to refrain from further action in one of the most stiffly-worded statements since the two Koreas embarked on reconciliation efforts early past year.

Four ballistic missiles were launched by the Korean People's Army during a military drill at an undisclosed location in North Korea, in a picture dated March 7, 2017.

Yang Uk, a senior research fellow at the Korea Defence and Security Forum, described Saturday's action as an expression of the North's frustration.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha talked by phone with Pompeo about the North Korean launches, Kang's ministry said in a statement.

Since their historic summit meeting in Singapore in 2018, Trump has said Kim remains committed to the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula.

Missiles from Hodo peninsula flew for between 70km and 200km, according to the agency.

Japan is seen as avoiding any harsh response as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe seeks to secure a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Since the collapse of the Hanoi summit, South Korean president Moon Jae-in - who brokered the first meeting between the mercurial U.S. and North Korean leaders - has tried to salvage diplomacy, but Pyongyang has remained largely unresponsive.

"We reacted to a potential threat, which is no longer a threat at this time".
