One killed when Russian Aeroflot plane lands with fire on board: agencies

The Russian news agency TASS, citing sources, said at least 1 person was killed in the blaze.

Interfax said 13 people died according to a preliminary count.

An airport official said that "many passengers delayed emergency evacuation - because against all instructions - they were picking up hand luggage from overhead compartments". "The plane jumped down the landing strip like a grasshopper and then caught fire on the ground".

A criminal case was opened after the incident on charges of violation of safety rules entailing the death of two or more people.

Aeroflot, the unofficial national airline of Russian Federation, confirmed that the fire occurred but hasn't said exactly how many people were injured.

Large flames engulfed the tail section of the Sukhoi Superjet plane as it made an emergency landing at the airport about 30 minutes after takeoff after at least one aborted attempt.

Videos on social media show passengers using emergency exit slides to escape the aircraft.

Video showed flames and billowing black smoke shooting from the plane as it landed.

Passengers aboard the Aeroflot Superjet-100 were forced to evacuate at speed following the incident in which the plane was consumed by fire.

A source told RIA that the fire was caused by "a malfunction of electrical equipment". Preliminary reports say the pilots declared an emergency before landing, according to RT.

The wreckage of a passenger plane is seen after an emergency landing at the Sheremetyevo Airport outside Moscow, Russia May 5, 2019.

Kristian Kostov, a former Russian Eurovision song contest entrant who was in the airport at the time, tweeted: "A lot of passengers just started screaming "oh shit shit shit oh no oh no fuck nooo!".
