Pompeo Accuses Iran of Series of Threatening Actions, Statements

The US, which is the UK's leading intelligence partner, has said it will not give Huawei, which its critics say is an arm of the Chinese Communist Party, any 5G contracts, amid concerns it could be used to spy on the US.

Washington is at odds with London over how much access Huawei Technologies should be given to next-generation communication networks using 5G technology.

Pompeo said China steals sensitive intellectual property and sensitive commercial data in Europe, Asia, and the United States, and singled out Huawei.

Pompeo skipped his meetings in Berlin with Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to press Iraqi leadership on the importance of guaranteeing Americans' safety and reining in Iranian-backed Shiite militias in the country.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt rushed to reassure the American. "With respect to 5G... we are making our views very well known".

Pompeo's unannounced trip to the Iraqi capital began and ended after nightfall under heavy security, following the abrupt cancellation of a visit to Germany.

Pompeo said China steals sensitive intellectual property and sensitive commercial data in Europe, Asia, and the United States, and singled out Huawei.

While "each country has a sovereign right to make its own decision about how to deal with the challenge", of whether to invite Chinese firms like Huawei and ZTE to bid on infrastructure contracts, the United Kingdom certainly wouldn't want to make the wrong decision, Pompeo hinted, adding, "I have great confidence that the United Kingdom will never take an action that will break this special relationship". Urban said Tuesday B-52 bomber jets were deploying to the region "to protect USA forces and interests in the region and to deter any aggression".

Iran, meanwhile, was expected to announced Wednesday that it would partially withdraw from the nuclear deal it struck with world powers in 2015.

He insisted that no decision on Huawei had officially been taken by the Government and "we need to take into account the issues of an open trading system but we also have to ensure protection, particularly of our critical national infrastructure, and that we'll do".

He said Russia's Nord Stream 2 project, a project to build a gas pipeline from Russian Federation to Germany, should not be allowed to proceed.

Shanahan added: "We call on the Iranian regime to cease all provocation".

The United States withdrew from the pact previous year, while Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation stayed in the accord with Tehran, under which Iran's nuclear curbs were rewarded with lifted sanctions.

Pompeo's trip to Iraq came amid news that Iran plans to announce it will reduce its commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - one year after the United States announced its departure from the landmark nuclear deal.

The U.S. diplomat also had tough words for supporters of Venezuelan President Maduro, following a question about British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's criticism of outside intervention in the country.
