Shooter opens fire at North Carolina university campus

"My students are so special to me and I am devastated", Johnson wrote.

Johnson declined to comment further Wednesday.

"When we are faced with something like this, I can't tell you the feelings, the sorrow", said Jeffrey Baker, chief of the university police. "Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately", the university said in an alert, referring to the school's Kennedy Hall administrative building on campus.

UNCC Chancellor Phillip Dubois told WBT Radio the two students who were killed were 19-year-old Ellis Parlier, of Midland, and 21-year-old Riley Howell, of Waynesville. A handful of officers entered the building, and one officer approached the gunman, disarmed him and took him into custody. The anthropology major huddled behind a table with her classmates. It sure what's going on, I just landed in Charlotte to terry news! "Among those unknowns is how we will navigate the remainder of the semester, including the final examination schedule and graduation", he said.

"It's the worst feeling when that text comes", she said. She said she was in shock to hear the terrible news.

Terrell was familiar with the classroom building where the attack occurred but it was unclear if he knew the students targeted, Putney said.

Brian Turner praised Howell, a 21-year-old junior from Waynesville, North Carolina, who was majoring in environmental studies, for his heroism in the face of nearly certain death. The four injured students were Rami Alramadhan, 20; Sean Depart, 20; Emily Houpt, 23; and Drew Pescaro, 19.

Gov. Roy Cooper said at a briefing late Tuesday that a "hard look" was needed into how the shooting happened and how to keep guns off campus and out of schools.

Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency said on Twitter that two people were killed, two others had life-threatening injuries and another two people were treated for less serious injuries.

They offered no explanation for the suspect's motive.

His grandfather, Paul Rold of Arlington, said he moved to Charlotte from Mansfield about two years ago after his mother died.

Two of the people who were injured in the shooting at UNC Charlotte on Tuesday live in Wake County. "This is not in his DNA".

The shooting has resulted in the cancellation of a free Waka Flocka concert on campus.

Junior Deja Stover, who wasn't on campus at the time of the shooting, arrived Wednesday to find sparse foot traffic and an atmosphere that was "pretty surreal".

UNC Charlotte police say when dispatch got the call for the shooting, officers raced over and they simultaneously locked down the campus and were able to catch the suspect immediately. "There's fear of course".
