Brexit Party fails to win first seat in UK by-election

Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May is set to step officially down from her role as party leader today.

Naturally reserved and reliant on her husband and a few close aides, she often says she is just quietly "getting on with the job". But is it really possible that the Brexit Party could run the country by the end of this year?

The Conservative candidate finished third behind Labour and the eight weeks-old Brexit party in the by-election, signifying a new phase in British politics long dominated by Labour, Conservative and the Liberal Democrats.

May, who had stepped down amid mounting pressure over her repeatedly defeated Brexit deal, will continue as acting prime minister until the party has elected her successor, who will then take charge as the premier.

The Conservative Party has been badly stung by the emerging Brexit Party, launched just two months ago by veteran Eurosceptic Nigel Farage.

Labour has narrowly won the Peterborough by-election, with Nigel Farage's Brexit Party coming second.

Boris Johnson, former foreign secretary and leading Brexiteer, is the favourite among 11 candidates to replace May in the two-phase leadership election.

"Conservatives must deliver Brexit by 31st October or we risk Brexit Party votes delivering Corbyn to No 10", he said on Twitter.

Nominations for the contest must be submitted on Monday, and the 313 Conservative MPs - including Mrs May - will hold the first of a series of secret ballots on June 13.

It had been seeking to capitalise on that momentum as well as voter disillusionment with the main Conservative and Labour parties, who have historically shared the Peterborough seat. Further rounds will be held on June 18, 19 and 20 if needed, with the least popular candidate dropping out each time.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's time as Conservative Party leader ended today, not with a bang but a whimper.

Other front runners are playing catch up, with the current foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt, and environment minister Michael Gove taking a more moderate stance on Brexit. To succeed, he or she will have to find consensus in parliament where I have not. The only way to stop this is to lead Britain out of the EU.

The final two candidates will meet in a runoff that will be decided in a mail-in vote by the country's approximately 160,000 Conservative Party members.

But the chances Britain's 27 European Union partners would consider reopening the legally binding divorce agreement appear slim at best.

Hard-core Brexiteers in the leadership contest say they would rather leave the bloc with no deal than countenance a further delay.

The only child of an Anglican minister, she ascended to the top government office in 2016 after becoming the leader of the Conservative Party.

Most economists and businesses say a no-deal Brexit would cause economic turmoil, imposing obstacles overnight between the United Kingdom and the European Union, its biggest trading partner.

The Peterborough election was triggered when Labour's Fiona Onasanya became the first member of Parliament to be ousted in a recall petition, after she was jailed for lying about a speeding offense.

He was quickly criticized by other contenders, who said that in Britain's democracy, Parliament is sovereign and must not be ignored. "I look back and I think I wish I hadn't done that", he said.
