Delhi: AIIMS doctors boycott work to support strike in WB

The Indian Medical Association has now called for a nationwide strike protesting the attack on a doctor in Kolkata. In the national capital, resident doctors at the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital stayed away from work. She has a tumour in one of her eyes. "Mamata Banerjee has done so much for Bengal, but I am sorry to say that I do not support the way she spoke to the doctors".

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan on Thursday, while condemning the "recent incidents of violence", urged patients and their caregivers to exercise restraints.

The IMA has also made a decision to continue their protest on Saturday and Sunday condemning the continued suffering of the resident doctors and repeated occurrence of harassments, it said.

"Emergency services will function normally as the resident doctors will purportedly continue to work as per their scheduled duties", AIIMS medical superintendent DK Sharma said in a statement today.

"... We take this opportunity to state that resolution of disputes which would have arisen as a outcome of certain unfortunate events even in the hospital is not to be countered by action of eminent and well informed people like doctors by keeping away from their primary and fundamental duty to serve the people". We have to find a way out from this crisis and I have come here as a citizen to express my solidarity. My mother is having a kidney problem.

"I will have to take my father somewhere else for his dialysis, maybe a private hospital", she told Reuters. He said, "I appeal to West Bengal CM to not make this an issue of prestige".

Speaking to ANI, Prashant Chaudhary, President of MARD at Sion hospital, said: "The incident was clearly a targeted assault".

"It was a unanimous decision to tender our resignation following our chief minister's indifferent attitude towards law and order situation in healthcare services". We express solidarity to the seriously injured doctors. "We know you (doctors) don't see the religion of any patient before providing them treatment".

Striking junior doctors turned down West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's invitation for a meeting at the state secretariat, which was called to resolved the impasse, and continued their protest for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday.

He further said that he wrote a letter to the government regarding the issue, but the stand in their reply was not "empathising".

Earlier, Kolkata Mayor and state Minister Firhad Hakim's daughter, a doctor, criticised the government's handling of the ongoing doctors' strike and said medicos had the right to "peaceful protest" and "safety at work".

"We demand documentary evidence and details of action taken against those who had attacked us", Dutta said.
