Dominican Republic Deaths: Another American Dies on Vacation in Caribbean Country

Here's what we know so far.

But the department has not issued a travel alert specific to the deaths in the Dominican Republic, and American officials have not said this year's deaths were connected.

News of the mass illness comes as another tourist has died in the Hispaniola island nation, bringing the total number of Americans to die mysteriously there to eight this year.

Dominican authorities say the deaths were unrelated. Miranda Schaup-Werner, a 41-year-old from Pennsylvania, checked into the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville on May 25 and started to feel sick after taking a drink from the minibar. He died hours later. Robert Bell Wallace and John Corcoran both died in April, and David Harrison and Yvette Monique Sport both died in as yet unexplained circumstances last summer.

The deaths represent a tiny percentage of the Americans who holiday on the island every year.

Another American tourist, Tammy Lawrence-Daley, 51, says she was beaten, choked, and left for dead by someone she believes was a hotel employee when staying at a plush all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana.

One person told NBC News that she lost 19 pounds, saying that she was "just grateful to be alive at this point".

His family are now trying to repatriate his body to USA where they hope that a post-mortem examination will reveal his cause of death.

The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship takes place on March 28, 2019 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. He was found in his hotel room, where he was staying with a friend, TMZ first reported. Schwander said they woke up one morning to a unusual smell in their room and severe headaches.

"We're going to go do some of our own grocery shopping", Skylar said.

"Before we went down, we had some family and friends a little concerned about everything", Skylar admitted, "but we felt comfortable and confident enough to go".

"I just woke up, and my stomach was cramping and I was sweating", Hill told KOCO-TV.

Who else has got sick?

The couple is reportedly suing their resort for $1M. Visitors from Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and NY have also told news outlets that they got sick at resorts in the country between June 2018 and May of this year.

Officials in the Dominican Republic have called the deaths isolated as they work to reassure travellers the country is safe.

Hotel workers found Allen on the floor.

Excellence Resorts in Punta Cana on Sunday confirmed that 53 year old Leyla Cox died last Monday in her hotel room. In the case of the other two - an engaged Maryland couple found dead on May 30 - a final report on the cause of death was pending. He had a heart attack, but an autopsy showed he also had fluid in his lungs, as did the three tourists who died most recently.

The FBI is helping local authorities with toxicology tests.

In a statement, the Hotel Riu Palace Macao said the guests became ill after a group activity outside the hotel so they could not determine the exact cause.

Allen's family wants his body returned to the United States as soon as possible, so they can pursue funeral plans.

The U.S. State Department now has a level 2 travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, which sits on an island in the Caribbean bordering Haiti.

Matthew Bradley, regional security director for the risk management firm International SOS, said in a statement this month that the Dominican Republic is still a safe destination. "The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale". Sport also had a drink from the minibar, she said.
