Fallout from Central Park Five Netflix series continues

The show has led to a backlash against Linda Fairstein, the NY prosecutor in the "Central Park Five" case, who has resigned from the boards of Vassar College and victim-assistance organization Safe Horizon.

More accurately, the brilliant but harrowing Ava DuVernay miniseries "When They See Us" actually did a great deal to make us see them - as in prosecutors Lederer and Linda Fairstein - who stepped on the souls of the Central Park Five 30 years ago to reach enviable heights for themselves in law, literature and academia.

'However, given the nature of the recent publicity generated by the Netflix portrayal of the Central Park case, it is best for me not to renew my teaching application'.

Yusef Salaam, left, Kevin Richardson, second left, and Raymond Santana, right, react to supporters in NY in 2012.

Lederer worked as a part-time law professor when the Black Law Students Association assembled on Tuesday and called for her to quit, calling her "racist" and demanded that the school fire her. Their convictions were vacated in 2002.

Since the release of the new Netflix documentary at the end of May, Lederer and fellow prosecutor Linda Fairstein have received an abundance of criticism regarding their handling of the case. "During the investigation, Lederer and her colleagues used harmful, racist tactics, including physical abuse and coercion, to force confessions from the five minors".

In a message sent to members of the Law School community on Wednesday, Law School Dean Gillian Lester affirmed her commitment to fostering conversations surrounding race, identity, and criminal justice.

The statement was accompanied by a petition calling for Columbia to cut ties with Lederer, which has received almost 10,000 signatures.

'I am deeply committed to fostering a learning environment that furthers this important and ongoing dialogue, one that draws upon the lived experiences of all members of our community and actively confronts the most hard issues of our time'. She is still a prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney's office.

Earlier this year, the BSO published "A Brief History of Anti-Black Violence and Policing at Columbia University", which outlined specific instances of Columbia's history of anti-black violence at the hands of "Columbia and Barnard Public Safety officers, the New York Police Department, and even white and non-Black Columbia students". Fairstein oversaw the case.

Netflix's "When They See Us" tells the story of the wrongful convictions of the five then-minors in the rape and beating of a jogger in 1989.
