Federer wins record 10th Halle Open title, 102nd overall

Roger Federer's Wimbledon preparations gained momentum as the Swiss blasted past Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 6-3 on Saturday to reach the final of the Halle Open where he is seeking a 10th title.

Up next for the 37-year-old, who is looking to win a 102nd tour-level trophy and move closer to Jimmy Connors' record of 109, is Belgian David Goffin who beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4) 6-3 in the other semi-final.

"It's unbelievable. I never thought when I first played here that I would win 10 titles", Federer said.

Federer fended all three off in the fifth game to lead 3-2 and was impeccable in the breaker, drilling down a fifth ace following a majestic half-volley before Goffin was long with a return to go a set down.

From there, the Swiss never looked back, breaking Goffin twice more on his way to a 10th Halle title.

After being dragged to three sets in two of his first three rounds in Germany, Federer looked set for another tough fight when world number 33 Goffin earned three consecutive break points at 2-2 in the opening set. "This guy is pretty good".

Federer is preparing for the Wimbeldon tournament as he attempts to win the English Grand Slam tournament for the eighth time.

Eight-time champion Federer will start as one of the favourites along with French Open champion Rafael Nadal, Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, and rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas.
