Google Responds To Genius’s Accusations, Insists They Do Not Plagiarize Song Lyrics

Instead of Google directing users to lyric publishers like Genius, the search engine seems to be focused on an increased effort to deliver song lyrics directly, with 62 percent of mobile users being led to Google "information boxes" rather than other sites. The Genius Media Group execs penned a letter to Google wherein they requested for them to not use the lyrics from the platform as it violates both the company's terms of service and antitrust law.

Salgar explicitly said Google does not crawl or scrape websites to source lyrics. To do this, Genius deliberately used straight and curved apostrophes in the lyrics on its website in order to watermark the lyrics in Morse code to spell out "red-handed". "The lyrics that you see in information boxes on Search come directly from lyrics content providers". "To help make it clearer where the lyrics come from, we'll soon include attribution to the third party providing the digital lyrics text", the company added.

Google says it pays music publishers the rights to display their lyrics.

"Over the last two years, we've shown Google irrefutable evidence again and again that they are displaying lyrics copied from Genius", Ben Gross, Genius's chief strategy officer told the Wall Street Journal in a statement.

Why the copying took place was due to an accidental mistake, according to LyricFind, a third-party company that supplies Google with the song lyrics. Google then yesterday says, we didn't do it, we paid for LyricFind to give us these lyrics they may have stolen from you guys - so blame them. "We're investigating this issue with our data partners and if we find that partners are not upholding good practices, we will end our agreements". "As a courtesy to Genius, our content team was instructed not to consult Genius as a source", LyricFind explained.

So far, Genius hasn't responded to Google's or LyricFind's new statements.
