I won't be part of electing new Congress chief: Rahul Gandhi

The internet is flooded with birthday wishes for Rahul Gandhi.

As speculation continues on his next steps, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said his party will decide on who his successor will be and not him.

Rafale as a Lok Sabha election issue had backfired for the Congress.

Since Independence, the Congress has been helmed by the Nehru-Gandhi family.

But the Congress refused to accept Mr Gandhi's decision and over the last weeks, has stuck to the template.

The Congress suffered a drubbing in the elections, winning only 52 seats - three short of the number required by a party to be able to appoint a Leader of Opposition. But Mr Gandhi has negated that option too, declaring that his mother or sister Priyanka Gandhi can not be given the responsibility.

Rahul has been the target of stinging barbs from leaders of the ruling party, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During that phase, the party did not fare too well under Sitaram Kesri, following which senior leaders had requested Sonia to don the mantel of the party presidentship.

The chief minister keeping an eye on the Lok Sabha polls had on February 5 allotted the home districts and constituencies to his cabinet colleagues but barring two all miserably failed to live up to the party's expectations. But after he refused, the party named its senior leader from Bengal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the post. After Rahul Gandhi became the president of the party, he selected Gehlot as the AICC secretary.
