McLaren F1 successor to be manufactured in new Surrey facility

It has the most advanced aerodynamics of any road vehicle, and it relies on design and engineering excellence to deliver the purest, most driver-focused performance and dynamics of any road auto since the F1. He has struck a deal with a yet-unnamed Formula 1 team to use their moving floor wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing.

Yes, it will. The T.50's guiding design philosophy is "performance through lightweight" and this V12 supercar will weigh just 980kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 495kW/tonne.

So far we have a single sketch to go on, and one which makes the shared DNA between the T.50 and the F1 clear. As Murray explained it, the T50 will be the last and greatest of "analog" supercars. "The reality of chasing top speeds only adds weight, notably through ever-more powerful engines, which increase the requirement for larger, heavier ancillaries".

A carbonfibre tub clad with carbon-composite panels helps the mission statement but the T.50's size also plays a key role. The rear suspension mounts directly onto the aluminium gearbox housing and the front suspension's mountings are bonded, in race style, into the carbon-fibre chassis structure. The design revolves around a naturally-aspirated, all-new V12 engine. Redline is a staggering 12,100rpm, peak torque is 450Nm, and peak power will be 650hp (485kW).

Those figures nearly look conservative in an age of four-digit horsepower supercars.

Murray's company is aiming to build 100 T.50s, with deliveries starting in early 2020.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a bespoke, lightweight six-speed transmission designed in conjunction with British transmission technology specialists Xtrac.

With cars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie getting ready to roll, it's rather bold to claim that this vehicle will have "absolutely the most advanced aerodynamics ever seen on a road car".

As for the design and aerodynamics, Gordon Murray Automotive is using active aero for the underbody, which can shape the ground-effect for the best stability.

The auto is described by the company as the "spiritual successor" to the McLaren F1, which was conceived by Mr Murray in the 90s. The closest rival to the T.50 would be the Aston Martin Valkyrie, but that hypercar is packaged with a hybrid system where the electric motors can handle the crawling and start-stop nature of real world road conditions.

Dihedral doors will feature, and Murray says there will be a "purity and beauty" about the design. It'll be an unexpectedly compact supercar, too: a smaller footprint than a Porsche 911, in fact.

That screaming engine will be mated with an H-pattern manual transmission, and the driver will sit in the middle of the cockpit, flanked by two passengers. Instead, the automaker says, it will be an "everyday supercar" with space for luggage and more.

In terms of aerodynamics, the T.50 takes inspiration from the McLaren F1. Murray has designed the T.50 with the same aims in mind, noting that it betters the F1 for luggage capacity, ease of entry and exit, and maintenance. "Also, driver-selectable engine maps ensure a driving mode to suit every situation".

Production will be limited to only 100 examples priced "in excess of £2 million (around $2.54 million USD)".
