What remains unclear is what triggered their sudden health deterioration.

The couple had internal bleeding, including in their pancreases.

According to the autopsy report, the couple suffered respiratory failure and fluid accumulation in their lungs, with Day also suffering a cerebral enema, though the cause of the fatal episodes was not clear and toxicology results are still pending.

Holmes had called for a hotel doctor on Thursday morning, complaining that he felt ill, but authorities say he refused medical help when the physician appeared. Investigators found "several pill bottles" of three medications, including the prescription opioid oxycodone, in the couple's room, the attorney general's office said. The pair was celebrating a wedding anniversary. A family spokesman for Schaup-Werner, Jay McDonald, told WFMZ-TV that the woman collapsed after getting a drink from the minibar.
