Protests in Iran on Jerusalem Day

The attack occurred on the last Friday of the Ramadan holiday, when thousands of Muslim worshipers were expected to come to a holy site in Jerusalem's Old City and police had deployed extra units to the area.

Israel, the United States and its chief Sunni Arab ally Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of fomenting tension in the Middle East and of sponsoring terrorism.

Most of the worldwide community has not recognized Israel's annexation of the eastern part of the city, which the Palestinians claim as their capital for a future state.

This year's protests took place as the White House is promoting the June 25-26 meeting in the Gulf state of Bahrain as the first phase of its Mideast peace plan.

They also demand an end to Israel's 12-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has destroyed the coastal enclave's economy and deprived its roughly two million inhabitants of many basic commodities.

Meeting in Mecca, the 57-country Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) denounced on Saturday the controversial U.S. move to transfer its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem and urged its members to "boycott" those countries that have opened embassies in the disputed city, whose eastern part is regarded by Palestinians as the capital of their future state.

Demonstrators burnt US and Israeli flags and effigies of US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Iran has quadrupled its production of enriched uranium amid tensions with the USA over Tehran's unraveling nuclear accord, two semi-official news agencies reported Monday, an announcement that came just after President Donald Trump and Iran's foreign minister traded threats and taunts", reports the Associated Press.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency said police in the western province of Kordestan had blocked a terrorist operation ahead of the Quds Day rally in Sanandaj city. The police added that they were launching a probe into the incident.

The European Union has denounced Israeli authorities' plans to expand settlements into occupied East Jerusalem as "an obstacle to peace".

He blamed Iranian-backed militias of being behind a subsequent drone attack on a Saudi oil pipeline.

The Iraqi militiamen marched in combat fatigues but were unarmed and did not showcase military vehicles and heavy weaponry, a contrast to previous years when they used the parade as an opportunity to showcase combat prowess.

"We reaffirm our unequivocal rejection of any measures that would prejudice the historical and legal status of Quds [Jerusalem]".

The decisions of the Arab and Islamic summits held in Makkah were a victory for the Palestinian position and sent a clear message to the American administration that this position is firm and clear in spite of all the conspiracies and attempts to liquidate its national cause, today said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas.

"No to the deal of the century", a banner read. "Its only crime is its support for Quds and Palestine".
