Rafael Nadal to face Roger Federer in French Open semi-finals

Maybe there's incredible wind or ten rain delays.

Roger Federer of Switzerland plays a forehand during his mens singles quarter-final match against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Nadal, 33, is into his 12th semi-final at Roland Garros and has won the tournament on all of the 11 previous occasions he has reached this stage. It will be their 39th career meeting and their sixth in Paris.

Nadal gave Nishikori words of encouragement, insisting that his presence in the world top 10 for five of the last six years is testament to his staying power.

"My next opponent is not too bad. He can play on clay, unfortunately", a smiling Federer joked to the crowd at Court Suzanne Lenglen. "What a pleasure, actually".

Until last week, that 2015 match was also the last time Federer played in the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, having missed the 2016 edition to rest a sore back and then skipping the clay season altogether the following two years.

Second seed Nadal enjoyed a 6-1 6-1 6-3 win over Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori in one hour and 51 minutes. Wawrinka's three victories over Federer have all come on clay, the last of which was right at this stage four years ago when the 20-time major victor was comprehensively beaten. A man from the host country hasn't won the French Open since Yannick Noah in 1983.

Federer and Wawrinka were locked in a taut fourth set when the clouds overhead grew thick and charcoal-colored. A couple of rain drops began to fall. I'm expecting Nadal to continuously pressure Nishikori's serve, which tends to be exposed by high level returners - it would be a major shock if Nadal was to be defeated this afternoon. But it didn't last long.

The Romanian third seed raced to a 6-1, 6-0 win as Swiatek failed to hold serve in the match. We should be able to get around [1.90] on Federer -4.5 games in the run-up to the match, and this is today's recommendation.

That turned out to be a tad complicated.

In the pivotal third set, Federer had to battle through five deuce points in the 11th game to keep Wawrinka at bay and retain the lead on serve, but he could not avoid a second tie-break. He was forced to deflect a break point for Wawrinka, doing so with a serve-and-volley victor.

Wawrinka then staved off a pair of break points to consolidate, though he required four chances to finally restore parity.

The men's draw has been far more predictable. No. 10 Karen Khachanov.

On Wednesday, he will now face German fifth seed Alexander Zverev, who has reached the quarter-finals for the second straight year.

Until this year, Konta had entered the clay-court major four times, losing in the first round each time. So she has gone from 0-4 before to 5-0 in 2019.

"Yes, I beat Serena, which was really good, but I knew that [Barty is] very tough and she's playing really well".
