Raspberry Pi 4 Launches With More Power and Options Than Ever Before

You can purchase the Raspberry Pi 4 from the official website as of now.

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 1GB of RAM is priced at £34 or $35 (around AU$50), and you'll pay £44 or $45 (around AU$65) for the 2GB version, and £54 or $55 (around AU$80) for the top-end offering with 4GB of RAM.

The powerful pocket desktop from Raspberry Pi just got beter while maintaining its attractive price tag. Due to the form factor remaining the same, it should also be possible to swap out an older model for a Pi 4 when you deem it's time to upgrade your DIY project.

Those who are unaware Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse.

Above I said "entry price" as there are three models simultaneously available today, which vary by the amount of LPDDR4 RAM pre-installed (I don't think the RAM is upgradeable - choose wisely).

While many companies have taken a run at making a better single-board computer, the Raspberry Pi family of devices reigns supreme among enthusiastic SBC hobbyists. In Q4 of 2018, Raspberry Pi 3+ and earlier models accounted for 2.5% of the global PC market.

What hasn't changed over the years, though, is a major drawback of the design: A communication infrastructure that sees the system-on-chip (SoC) of every Raspberry Pi communicating with external devices over a single 480Mb/s USB 2.0 channel.

Alternate Title: Raspberry Pi 4 finally moves to USB-C; ball's in your court, headphone-makers.

The new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B features a brand new quad-core 1.5GHz 64-bit CPU based on ARM Cortex-A72 cores.

Some of the ports from previous incarnations of the Pi are also getting an upgrade.

The faster BCM2711 allows the Raspberry Pi 4 to perform feats unthinkable with the Pi 3.

In addition to the hardware improvements, the Raspberry Pi Foundation says the new PC will have an "extensively modernised user interface" including an updated Chromium 74 web browser.

You also get a pair of USB 3.0 ports, alongside two USB 2.0 connectors, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and on the wireless front, 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.
