Reason why Cam Newton was flying coach back from France revealed

According to a fellow passenger on Newton's trip to from the French city to the USA, the athlete, 30, was allegedly overheard offering a man $1,500 in cash for his airplane seat. The passenger in the seat shakes his head at whatever Newton is saying and the quarterback moves on toward the back of the plane, ready for that long trans-Atlantic flight.

The video shows Newton pointing at a seat that's already been taken - a seat that seems to be in a row without seats in front of it.

Edwards, who lives in Alaska, told CNN he was flying back to the United States from Paris on the same flight as Newton and had run into him a little earlier at the airport. As passengers boarded, he recorded Newton, and said he heard the seated passenger ask Newton his height before declining the $1,500 offer.

"I said hi to him, shook his hand", he said.

Cam Newton is seen speaking with the man, whom he offered $1,500 for the seat swap.

That left the six-foot-five National Football League quarterback stuck in a regular coach seat for the entire ten-hour flight overseas.

Newton was sharing photos in Paris for much of last week, including Instagram pictures at the Louvre and Paris Fashion Week.

Neither Newton's personal rep nor his team, the Carolina Panthers, responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment.
