Syria says Israeli attacks kill 3 soldiers, wound 7

Three Syrian military personnel died as a result of the strike, while seven were wounded.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said "warehouses and positions" in the Kesswa region, where Syrian and Iranian forces and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters allied to Damascus have been stationed, were targeted.

Israel has carried out airstrikes in Syria in response to rare rocket fire from the neighbouring country, its military said, with a war monitor reporting that 10 people had been killed, including Syrian soldiers and foreign fighters.

The Israeli army said its own aerial defence systems were activated due to the Syrian anti-aircraft fire, but none of the Syrian fire hit Israel.

Two rockets were fired Saturday from Syria towards the Golan Heights, causing no casualties, the Israel Defense Forces said. Syrian media said a soldier was killed in that attack.

The IDF stuck several Syrian Armed Forces targets that included two artillery batteries, observation and intelligence posts, as well as a SA-2 aerial defence battery.

On 27 May, Syria said Israel carried out a missile attack in Quneitra, the province which also includes the Golan Heights, most of which is occupied by Israel.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he had ordered the strike.

The rockets fired on Friday are not believed to be spillover from internal fighting in Syria as was the case in past rocket fire on the country's North, as there are not any Syrian operations in the area close to the border with the Golan.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in Syria, majority against what it says are Iranian and Hezbollah targets. "We will not tolerate firing into our territory and will respond fiercely against any aggression against us", he said in a statement.

In January, the Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted an Iranian-made surface-to-surface model with a 200 km. range and payload of hundreds of kilograms of explosives that was sacked from the outskirts of Damascus.

Israeli officials have repeatedly voiced concerns over Iran's presence in Syria and the smuggling of sophisticated weaponry to Hezbollah from Tehran to Lebanon via Syria, stressing that both are redlines for the Jewish state.
