Thousands in Istanbul pray for ex-Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi

The regime has systemically tortured many political prisoners and has denied them the right to fair representation and a fair trial.

He became Egypt's first freely elected president a year after a 2011 popular uprising seeking democracy and social equality toppled the autocratic, 29-year rule of Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt's Attorney General, Nabil Sadek, said in a statement: "While the defendant Mohammed Morsi Al-Ayyat and the other defendants were in the dock, he fainted and fell to the ground and was immediately taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Sisi and his regime are fully responsible for the result".

Morsi last saw his family in September 2018.

In Ankara, Ali Erbas, the president of Turkey's state-run religious affairs directorate or Diyanet led the prayers at the historic Haci Bayram mosque as hundreds of faithful including Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin mouthed verses of the Quran.

The reports made no mention of Morsi's status as either a former or an overthrown president.

There were a dozen other Brotherhood members on trial inside the glass cage, including some physicians who in vain tried to administer CPR, said Mandour.

He studied engineering at the University of Cairo where he graduated in the 1970s, then moved to the United States for his doctorate.

Morsi's first foray into politics was in 2000 when he ran for the Egyptian parliament as an independent.

Meanwhile, thousands of Turkish immigrant workers in Germany were influenced by Brotherhood members granted refuge from Egypt's military leaders there.

"What happened to Morsi is a crime against humanity and against the Arab peoples", he stated. The abuses against all sources of dissent that accompanied the consolidation in power of another elected leader, Abdel Fatah el-Sisi, raised awkward questions for a year or two about the extent to which concerns for the respect of human rights should shape Western foreign policy approaches. The movement and its members had experienced brutal crackdowns before - the movement's cautiousness stemmed from a bitter past. Brotherhood supporters reacted violently to some protests. It is primarily this episode that would be used against Morsi. The organisation called on Egyptians to gather at the funeral.

The Brotherhood won the elections held after Mubarak's fall, considered the first free votes the country had seen.

Soon after the parliamentary elections, with the wind in their sails, the Muslim Brotherhood weighed whether it should run a presidential candidate.

Local media hinted that the burial was quiet for security reasons, with one famous pro-state television presenter warning it could lead to clashes between opponents and supporters of Morsi should it be held in public.

He was mocked for not being the favourite.

Egyptian media, which are tightly controlled, gave the news little attention. He was the first civilian to hold the office in Egypt.

The Egyptian military watched as Morsi struggled to wield power.

In July 2013, the military ousted him after massive demonstrations erupted against his government, arresting him and other top Islamist leaders.

The man that had tried to turn the page on Egypt's dictators would be taught a lesson. The academy is adjacent to the Torah prisons complex that houses the maximum security facility nicknamed The Scorpion.

The Al Akhbar paper's coverage was similar and included one paragraph entitled: "The death of Mohamed Morsi during his trial".
